Mullion funicolar pattern
The original inspiration for the piece, the mullion funicolar pattern.
"This pattern is composed of vertical waving lines meeting and diverging at regular intervals, and thus describing a figure strikingly analogous to certain sinuous mullions often employed by the architect in decorating the windows of gothic buidings."
Image and text taken from the book "Classic Textile Designs" by M. Dupont-Auberville, first published in 1877. A reborn interest in historic patterns was due to the influence of Arts and Craft Movement designers looking to the traditional handcrafts of the past to improve decoration in their own time.

You may see a similar pattern, with heraldic emblems of Pope Leo X, in a replica of a papal vestment made by Ars Regia on 2008. See www.ars-regia.com and search "Leone X".

ah... those delightful books from the late 1800s. So much to learn from and use! thanks for the source tip, I haven't seen this book yet. Hopefully I can find a copy for my collection.
